Jeg er pædagogstuderende og har afsluttet min 1. årsopgave, men mangler stadig min eksamen d. 6. jan.

Title: Misdiagnosis and dual diagnosis of gifted children Citation: Abstracted from: Misdiagnosis and Dual Diagnoses of Gifted Children and Adults: ADHD, bipolar, OCD, Asperger's, depression, and other disorders. (2004) Scottsdale: Great Potential Press. Available from the publisher.
Many gifted and talented children (and adults) are being mis-diagnosed by psychologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, and other health care professionals. The most common mis-diagnoses are: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (OD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Mood Disorders such as Cyclothymic Disorder, Dysthymic Disorder, Depression, and Bi-Polar Disorder. These common mis-diagnoses stem from an ignorance among professionals about specific social and emotional characteristics of gifted children which are then mistakenly assumed by these professionals to be signs of pathology.
In some situations where gifted children have received a correct diagnosis, giftedness is still a factor that must be considered in treatment, and should really generate a dual diagnosis. For example, existential depression or learning disability, when present in gifted children or adults, requires a different approach because new dimensions are added by the giftedness component. Yet the giftedness component typically is overlooked due to the lack of training and understanding by health care professionals (Webb & Kleine, 1993).
Despite prevalent myths to the contrary, gifted children and adults are at particular psychological risk due to both internal characteristics and situational factors. These internal and situational factors can lead to interpersonal and psychological difficulties for gifted children, and subsequently to mis-diagnoses and inadequate treatment.

Psychological Misdiagnosis of Gifted and Talented Children by Amy Scholten, MPH
En Español (Spanish Version) Contrary to popular belief, gifted, talented, and creative children face many challenges. One challenge is being correctly identified as gifted. The other is living in a world where their personal traits are often poorly understood.
Such challenges put gifted and talented children at risk for having certain difficulties at home and school. To make matters worse, giftedness is often misdiagnosed or overlooked by psychologists, psychiatrists, and other doctors.

Misdiagnosis of Gifted Children Tuesday July 24, 2007 I recently received a note from a worried mother. She said that her 23-month-old son knew letters, colors, and shapes. He had no deficits in speech and had a vocabulary of about 200 words. She described him as a loving, very social child who enjoyed books and puzzles. So why was this mother worried?
She was worried because her friend, who happens to be a school psychologist, told her that toddlers with such advanced "splinter skills" could regress and become autistic. Worse yet, this psychologist told the mom she should take away all her son's learning toys and focus on social skills -- even though her son had no deficits in social skills. This poor mom was scared every time her son sat down to work a puzzle!
I was absolutely appalled that someone would suggest taking educational toys away from a child, but even more appalled that the person making the suggestion was a psychologist (and one who worked with autistic children at that!) There is no evidence that I can find suggesting that what parents allow their children to play with causes autism or even increases a child's chances of developing autism.
This looks to me like one more disorder or disability that gifted children are diagnosed with. While I support early diagnosis of disorders and disabilities in children, those diagnoses should be made carefully. An accurate diagnosis can help a child; an inaccurate one could be harmful.
